I have have thin kinky hair that runs down to my shoulders full of small locs (which many people think are sister locs, but it’s not). My husband is European with thick blond hair that falls down his back. Each person is entitled to have their own optional. Unfortunately, that will create the dreaded build up inside the loc, so it will be imperative that people with other hair types wash their hair more often and avoid products like leave-in conditioner and oil of any kind.Īs far as the look goes. If a person does not have this hair type, they can still have locs, but it will take much more maintenance because of all the extra oils and and products that are often used to hold the look. Kinky hair does not do this on its own because the hair grows outward and gravity keeps the oils in the scalp (which can create an itchy feeling for some people). It also helps dry hair keep in natural oils because now the natural oils can travel down the hair follicles through the head. Locs protect the hair follicles by allowing the follicles to hold on to each other to prevent breaking. This hair type (my hair type) is difficult to grow because the hair follicles are so thin and delicate that it breaks with minimal grooming. Beyond the history of locs (which dates before Rastafarians), locs are a protective hairstyle for kinky, thin, and dry hair. I only had about 18 months in between that time, which I didn’t have locs because the Army didn’t allow it (it does now). At music festivals you will always see some girls wearing fake dreads and it's hilarious to see. We laughed at the yarn jobs and extensions because those don't take the commitment real dreads do They just look ridiculous. I loved having them though! It was fun to decorate and do up in unique styles. That and the weight really pushed me to finally cut them off. I couldn't just go jump in a lake or river without thinking about how long it would take to dry, or making sure I washed out the river water and the sediment. When I cut mine, after four years, I was so happy to see they were clean inside. You can really tell at a glance who takes care and who doesn't. I did see a ton of nasty ass dreads though, so I can see why folks think its gross. Folks with dreads tend to chat and talk about it, online and in person, and I could not believe how much bad info was out there. I knew what kind of products you could/couldn't use and did maintenance religiously. I had them for four years till the weight of them at mid back was too much. Nice dreads are a high maintenance style.
